The Knife: "Pass This On"

I'm in love with your brother
What's his name?

I thought I'd come by

To see him again

When you two danced
, Oh what a dance
When you two laughed
, Oh what a laugh

Has he mentioned my age love?

Or is he more into young girls with dyed black hair?

I'm in love with your brother

I thought I'd come by
I'm in love with your brother
, Yes I am
But maybe I shouldn't ask for his name
And you danced , Oh what a dance
And you laughed
, Oh what a laugh
Does he know what I do?

And you'll pass this on, won't you?

And if I ask him once what would he say?

Is he willing?
Can he play?
If I ask him once what would he say?
Is he willing?
Can he play?

Does he know what I do?
And you'll pass this on, won't you?

And if I ask him once what would he say?

Is he willing?
Can he play?

...
a few things on my mind.

one, this track sounds so serious,
like it
should be in some movie where something
almost
apocolyptic is about to happen...
but the lyrics
are kind of comical to me.
what kind of dance?
and what does she do?

also, for the longest time, i thought

"can he play?" was really "can he pay?"

that changed things a little for me.

finally, the main thing i'm thinking about is
how often, when freelurving, we rely on other
people to say the things we cannot seem to say
to the person we need to be saying them to.

sometimes it works... but rarely. and we are
all
guilty of doing this, myself included.

it's taken me years and years to even recognize

the value of being straightforward and honest
when
it comes to relationships, yet it still
takes me
so long to actually say whatever has been
racing
through my mind, over and over, to the
person i need
to tell. fear of being dramatic,
fear of hearing
a response i don't want to hear,
fear of things
changing, fear of making myself
vulnerable... all
of the above are often in my way.

not sure what mix cd you would want this
song on...
but i do think it's good to take
a minute sometimes
to reflect on the things we
have to say that we avoid
and the reasons we want
someone else to say them for us.
i am doing exactly
that today and realizing
i have a few things
that need to come out. and
i think i might finally
be ready to say them for myself.

on repeat: "Concept of Love"

guess i'm stuck on this
understanding business...
lost cause for the most part.
no, that's unnecessarily negative.
it takes work, but it's worth it.

so, enjoy the flashback to
jet grind (or jet set in japan)
radio with all the characters
busting hot rollerblading moves
to a medley of video game tracks.

happy valentine's day from freelurving

this valentine's day
let's aim for understanding.
or anti-valentine's day...
whichever rendition of this
candy coated holiday
you choose to recognize.

...
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh baby please don't let me by misunderstood
...

written by horace ott in 1964,
with the help of bennie benjamin
and sol marcus, this track was
originally performed by nina simone.
in 1965, the animals' cover quickly
became one of their biggest hits, and
ten years later, santa esmerelda disco
danced out a 16 minute latino version*,
also a huge success.

who will be next?

*please go to santa esmerelda's website
and then watch the video for "don't let me
be misunderstood" because it is all just
so ridiculous it's great... love the show
of french and us alliance with the
waving flags on the home page. so cheesy.
